College History

In 2005 there was only one B.Ed. college in the entire district of Kanyakumari. It was a dire necessity for more B.Ed. Colleges. So the Anna Vinayagar Educational and Cultural Trust proposed to start a college of Education in 2006. To this effect a resolution was passed on 30-10-2006.

It was followed by necessary initiatives and steps to start the college in the year 2006 – 2007. There were many hurdles and technical snags and the starting of the college did not materialize in that year. However due to the tireless and enthusiastic efforts of the chairman, Er. P. Sivathanu and Secretary, Mr. A. Kanagasabapathy, the college became a reality in the year 2007-2008. The college could not have come into existence but for the support and guidance of many in particular Mr. Kodikal S. Shiek Abdulla, Director, MET Colleges; Dr. B. Krishna Prasad, Principal, NVKSD College of Education, Attoor; Prof S. Kumaravelu, retired principal, Lekshmipuram College of Arts and Science, Neyyoor and Hon.N. Sureshrajan, former Minister of Tamil Nadu Government.

The Manonmaniam Sundaranar University in their order No. MSU / CD / FA / B.Ed. / 2007 – 2008 dated 20-11-2007 granted temporary affiliation to the college with a sanctioned strength of 100 students. Our college has been affiliated to Tamil Nadu Teachers Education University, Chennai since 2008-2009 after it has been carved out as a separate University exclusively for the cause of Teacher Education by the government of Tamil Nadu. The college functions in the permanent building with Survey No: 563 / 11, 563 / 12.

The college started functioning with Dr. S. Arokiaswamy as Principal on 24-11-2007. He was succeeded by Dr. S.A. Remijuse Bharatharaj as principal who served the institution with obligation till his retirement on 31-1-2011 due to superannuation. After his retirement Dr. K.V. Devanandan was appointed as principal. He was succeeded by Dr. M. Kayalvizhi as Principal who works with dedication and commitment in upbringing our B.Ed. college. It is worthwhile mentioning that during her tenure our college has been accredited with ‘B’ Grade by NAAC on 9th July, 2013.

Trust

Anna Vinayagar after whom the Trust and the Institution run by it are named, is the presiding deity of the Anna Vinayagar Temple, Ganapathipuram. It is a private family Temple.

A primary School namely Anna Vinayagar Devasthanam primary School, Ganapathipuram was started in the early 1930’s to cater to the needs of elementary education of economically poor people in Ganapathipuram and surrounding villages. In 1947 it grew up into a middle school. Then it was upgraded as a High School and subsequently as a Higher Secondary School. The School has earned reputation as one of the best schools in the district. The school stood state first in +2 in Agriculture. It has produced students who are now occupying high places in the national and international arena. Mr.Rajarathinam, the Arjuna award recipient and Dr. K. Chockalingam, former Vice Chancellor of Manonmaniam Sundaranar University and International expert in Criminology were alumni of this school.

With the view to go further in the field of education and to promote cultural activities of the village a new Trust, an offspring of the Anna Vinayagar Devasthanam was formed in the year 1996. The Trust was known as “Anna Vinayagar Educational And Cultural Trust” and is managed by a committee comprising of the Three trustees of Anna Vinayagar Devasthanam and two members co-opted by them. It is a registered trust with Reg. No: 721 dated 26-12-1996.

The trust in the year 1998 started an Industrial Training Centre approved by National Council of Vocational Training (NCVT), New Delhi and the Government of Tamil Nadu. Two year training course are conducted in the Trades, Fitter, Electrician and Motor vehicle mechanic. The training given by the center in all the courses is acclaimed by various industrial establishments in Tamil Nadu and invariably every trainee is getting good placement after the completion of the course. The management and the staff of the training centre take pride that their wards are well placed in life. In the year 1999 the Trust started a Driving School approved by the Government of Tamil Nadu. It has produced very good light vehicle and heavy vehicle drivers.

There were a good number of Arts and Science colleges in Kanyakumari district during 2005. But there was a dearth of Education Colleges for the willing graduates and Post- graduates coming out of these Arts and Science colleges. With the good intention of making some contributions in these aspects the Trust started a new college of Education named as “Anna Vinayagar College of Education” at Ganapathipuram in the year 2007. The Higher Secondary School, the Industrial Training Centre, the Driving School and the B.Ed. College are indeed a boon to this economically backward area.
